چکیده

The objectives of this technical note are to review the gas transport mechanisms through flexible geomembranes, and to measure the methane gas transmission rate, permeance, and permeability coefficient of PVC, LLDPE, and HDPE geomembranes by performing the standard gas transport test (ASTM D1434). The measured methane gas permeability coefficient through a PVC geomembrane is 7.55 3 10 ml(STP).mil/m.day.atm, which is slightly less than the gas permeability coefficient of 8.61 3 10 ml(STP).mil/m.day.atm through an LLDPE geomembrane, but slightly higher than the gas permeability coefficient of 3.91 3 10 ml(STP).mil/m.day.atm through an HDPE geomembrane. Thus HDPE exhibits a lower gas permeability coefficient than LLDPE. A field design chart for estimating the methane gas transmission rate for different geomembrane thicknesses is proposed using the measured permeability coefficients for PVC, LLDPE, and HDPE geomembranes and Fick’s law. This chart can be used by landfill designers to evaluate the methane gas transmission rate for a selected geomembrane type and thickness and expected methane gas pressure in the landfill.

Kinetics of Methane Oxidation in a Landfill Cover Soil: Temporal Variations, a Whole-Landfill Oxidation Experiment, and Modeling of Net CH4 Emissions

Rates and controlling variables for methanotrophic oxidation of methane at a northeastern Illinois landfill with pumped gas recovery were examined in a field study from June to December 1995. Cover materials consisted of a simple claytopsoil sequence without geomembranes. Through use of a static enclosure (closed chamber) technique supplemented by soil gas concentration profiles and field incub...

Passing gas through the hydrate stability zone at southern Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon

We present an equilibrium model of methane venting through the hydrate stability zone at southern Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon. Free gas supplied from below forms hydrate, depletes water, and elevates salinity until pore water is too saline for further hydrate formation. This system self-generates local three-phase equilibrium and allows free gas migration to the seafloor. Log and core data f...

An investigation of toluene and TCE diffusion through EVOH in aqueous solutions

Barrier systems are designed to control contaminant migration. Geomembranes are commonly used as part of a composite liner in landfill cover, base liner systems and sometimes vapour barriers. In landfill applications, the primary function of the geomembrane liner is to control contaminant transport from the leachate (dissolved phase) and landfill gas (vapour phase) out of the landfill thus mini...

Secondary migration and leakage of methane from a major tight-gas system

Tight-gas and shale-gas systems can undergo significant depressurization during basin uplift and erosion of overburden due primarily to the natural leakage of hydrocarbon fluids. To date, geologic factors governing hydrocarbon leakage from such systems are poorly documented and understood. Here we show, in a study of produced natural gas from 1,907 petroleum wells drilled into a Triassic tight-...

Reservoir simulation-based modeling for characterizing longwall methane emissions and gob gas venthole production

Longwall mining alters the fluid-flow-related reservoir properties of the rocks overlying and underlying an extracted panel due to fracturing and relaxation of the strata. These mining-related disturbances create new pressure depletion zones and new flow paths for gas migration and may cause unexpected or uncontrolled migration ofgas into the underground workplace. One common technique to contr...
